Congratulations to Meredith Voltin, M.B.A., APR for recently earning her APR.

Meredith recently joined the UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation at UnitedHealth Group as a senior project manager putting her passion for healthcare to work. Before this, Meredith worked at Carmichael Lynch Relate, U.S. Bank, The Manhattan Toy Company and Kohnstamm Communications. Along with her professional work, she serves as a board member and public relations and social media manager for Bowling for Brains, an annual event raising funds for the American Brain Tumor Association and Givens Brain Tumor Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

Meredith holds a Master’s Degree in business administration from Hamline and a Bachelor’s Degree in public relations and broadcast journalism from the University of St. Thomas.

Recently we asked Meredith three questions:

1. What motivated you to pursue your APR?

Meredith credits three things; a friend, the firm at which she was working during the process and mentors. To get things started, Meredith was encouraged by a friend and colleague as well as mentors who motivated her to attend the APR weekend workshop. Then, Carmichael Lynch Relate supported her by assisting with the enrollment costs as well as donating study materials.

2. What is the biggest benefit in achieving your APR?

Meredith touts the APR process for strengthening her professionally and refining her skills. It helped her “think bigger and dig deeper into the research” during the strategic planning process. It also equipped her with a better understanding of how to communicate her skills internally and externally more effectively. Lastly and importantly, it has helped her become stronger counselor driving business outcomes, rather than just focusing on tactics and outputs.

3. Any advice or fun tips for others considering their APR?

Meredith’s topline advice is to go into the APR process being open to learning and being honest about what you don’t know. She says, “You'll be surprised how much you learn by just being reminded of what you possibly already learned in school - but this time you'll be able to relate it to your career practice thus far. Also, while going through your APR, reach out to fellow PRSA folks who have their APR and seek their advice and tips on the steps you're on. You'll network with some super smart, fun and kind PR professionals and will learn a lot that will benefit your APR and own profession. I was blown away by the support I received from our community when I did this. So many practitioners well beyond me in experience responded with eagerness to help me and learn about my career.”

Meredith lives in Minneapolis with her husband and enjoys many things including: time with family and friends, traveling, good food, taking pictures, music, being active and weekends at her cabin.
